Distances to Local Group Galaxies via Population II, Stellar Distance Indicators. II. The Fornax Dwarf Spheroidal*

چکیده
We determine three independent Population II distance moduli to the Fornax dwarf spheroidal (dSph) galaxy, using wide-field, ground-based $VI$ imaging acquired with Magellan-Baade telescope at Las Campanas Observatory. After subtracting foreground stars Gaia EDR3 proper motions, we measure an $I$-band tip of red giant branch (TRGB) magnitude $I_0^\mathrm{TRGB} = 16.753 \pm 0.03_\mathrm{stat} 0.037_\mathrm{sys}$ mag, a calibration based in LMC giving modulus $\mu_0^\mathrm{TRGB} 20.80 0.037_\mathrm{stat} 0.057_\mathrm{sys}$ mag. RR Lyrae (RRL) from template mean magnitudes, periods adopted literature. Adopting DR2 first overtone RRL period-luminosity and period-Wesenheit relations, find $\mu_0^\mathrm{PLZ} 20.74 0.01_\mathrm{stat} 0.12_\mathrm{sys}$ mag $\mu_0^\mathrm{PWZ} 20.68 0.02_\mathrm{stat} 0.07_\mathrm{sys}$ Finally, Fornax's horizontal (HB) two galactic globular cluster calibrators, $\mu_0^\mathrm{HB} 20.83 0.09_\mathrm{sys}$ These distances are each derived homogeneous IMACS photometry, anchored geometric zero-points, utilize different classes stars. therefore average over uncertainties report combined $\langle \mu_0\rangle 20.770 0.042_\mathrm{stat} 0.024_\mathrm{sys}$ (corresponding $143\pm3$ kpc).

The Araucaria Project. Infrared TRGB distances to the Carina and Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxies 1
– 2 – We present distance determinations for two Local Group dwarf spheroidal galaxies, Carina and Fornax, based on the near-infrared magnitudes of the tip of the red giant branch (TRGB). For Carina we derive true distance moduli of 20.09 and 20.13 mag in the J and K bands, respectively, while for Fornax the same distance modulus of 20.84 mag was derived in both filters. The statistical errors ...
متن کاملLight - weight Local Group Dwarf Spheroidal Galaxies
A simple and natural explanation for the dynamics and morphology of the Local Group Dwarf Spheroidal galaxies, Draco (Dra) and Ursa Minor (UMi), is that they are weakly unbound stellar systems with no significant dark matter component. A gentle, but persistent, Milky Way (MW) tide has left them in their current kinematic and morphological state. This short paper reviews the parametric tidal int...
متن کاملThe stellar populations of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy
We present B, V, I CCD photometry of about 40000 stars in four regions of the Fornax dwarf spheroidal galaxy down to V ∼ 23.5, the largest three-color data set obtained for this galaxy until now. The resultant color-magnitude diagrams, based on a wide color baseline, show a variety of features tracing the history of star formation of this dwarf galaxy. One of the most distinctive features in ou...
متن کاملBlue straggler stars in dwarf spheroidal galaxies II: Sculptor and Fornax
The existence of blue straggler stars (BSSs) in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) is still an open question. In fact, many BSS candidates have been observed in the Local Group dSphs, but it is unclear whether they are real BSSs or young stars. Shedding light on the nature of these BSS candidates is crucial, in order to understand the star formation history of dSphs. In this paper, we consider B...
متن کاملThe mass distribution of dwarf spheroidal galaxies from stellar kinematics: Draco, Ursa Minor and Fornax
We model three dSph galaxies, Draco, Ursa Minor and Fornax, as axisymmetric stellar systems embedded in spherical dark-matter potentials, which are in dynamical equilibrium without significant external tidal forces. We construct non-parametric twoand three-integral models that match the observed surfacedensity profiles and the current kinematic samples of∼ 150−200 stars per galaxy; these models...
